How can we introduce complex topics, like compound words, at the starter level?
How can we get children acquainted with them?
The
purpose of this blog is to introduce "Visiting my Grandparents", a digital storybook for starters, as a resource
for teaching compound words.
The
story includes colourful images on each page, so that children can infer and understand by themselves the meaning of new complex words.
Moreover,
they can be aware that many words they`ve been using since the beginning of their learning process, like greetings as
“goodbye”, are made up of two words and called “compound words”.
From the context of the Curriculum Design for Primary School in the province of Buenos Aires, I`ve chosen those related to “family” and “daily activities”.
I intended to create an easy-to-use resource for teachers and children alike, adaptable to
both virtual and in-person learning, engaging and interactive. Students will enrich their vocabulary in an entertaining way.
The Storybook also
includes games about the main topic, so young learners will be able to interact by
filling in blanks and solving some quizzes.
Here is the link to share the storybook with your young students:

Let them explore the book, work out the meaning of the new words, relate concepts and enjoy the experience.
You can share your
observations and suggestions in the comments below. Thank you very much!
